Many major corporations are rushing to establish a presence on the Internet. What is even more impressive is the number of small businesses that have set up web sites right along side these corporate giants. A presence on the Internet can be a useful marketing tool for many companies. Below are some guidelines to follow if you are interested in setting up a web site.

Provide Useful Information ( Content is Everything ! )

A designer can make a page look good, but if there isn't any worthwhile content, users will not visit it more than once. Give people a reason to visit your web site by providing them with information or entertainment. By providing industry information or tips you can increase your advertising base to not only reach those interested in your product but also those who are casually surfing the internet in search of information related to your industry.

Avoid Large Graphics

Graphics are important in capturing and retaining the attention of users, however, they should not be overdone. Large, complex graphics take a long time to load. Most users would rather move on to another web site than to wait for these files to load. In addition, not all users of the internet view the web graphically. Since users have already decided to visit your web site, it is not necessary to catch their attention all over again with eye-catching graphics. More emphasis should be placed on the content and the message you wish to convey. If you must have large graphic files, reduce the resolution of your graphics to 72 dots per inch.

Graphics Compression Selection

Graphics on the Internet come in two flavors, GIF and JPG. When a GIF or a JPG loads into your browser, the image starts as a bar at the top and then slowly fills in a few rows at a time. GIF stands for Graphical Interface Format. This type of compression works the best when there is very little change in color in the horizontal or x-axis. The compression algorithms go down the horizontal row of pixels and performs algorithmic comparisons between each pixel. An associated compression format is GIF89a. This format is similar to the standard GIF except when the graphical images loads into your browser, the image appears as a blob and then clarifies on each pass. This decompression is some times referred to as the Venetian Blind decompression.

JPG stands for Joint Photographers Experts Group. This compression works best on images with 256 or milions of color with no obvious pattern. Compressions of up to 20: 1 have been established.
